Music in the Firelands event at the Wolcott Keeper's House

Timeless music; toe tapping music...music in the Firelands. Saturday July 11, 2009 from 10:00-3:30 at the Wolcott Keeper’s House, 9999 East Bayshore Road, Marblehead. Gather your blanket or lawn chair and make the short drive to the 1820’s home of Marblehead’s first lighthouse keepers, Benajah and Rachel Wolcott. Tour the house and cemetery. Get your picture taken in the new photo murals. Snack on fish sandwiches or brats from the Rotary Fish Wagon, top it off with pie or brownies and ice cream while you enjoy the traditional music of dulcimer player Tracie Henson from noon until two. At 2:00, the 70 piece North Coast Concert Band takes the spotlight in the natural amphitheater behind the Keeper’s House for a concert of rousing band music-standards, marches, and show tunes. Celebrate the tradition of frontier fiddler Benajah Wolcott, who played his violin in the lonely hours between tending the signal fire, and played for dances and other events for the recent arrivals to the Firelands frontier. Wolcott even played for the first 4th of July celebration in Cleveland after the war of 1812.
The Wolcott Keepers House is a project of the Ottawa County Historical Society, who purchased it in 1989. The O.C. H. S. Keeper’s House Committee has been carefully restoring it as as an authentic piece of Ottawa County History with the help of donations, fund raising, and grants. Docent led tours are available throughout the summer season-Monday through Friday from 1-5. The house also serves as a popular venue for performances, historical reenactments, frontier crafts, fireplace cooking demonstrations, and meetings.
